Caribbean and Central America
A great birding and cultural trip that got us into rural and natural areas of this fascinating country. Everything from recording Elian's "kidnaping" by the US Justice Dept. from a TV at The Bay of Pigs to great birds, cars and farmers' markets; 4/2000.
I like Panama better than Costa Rica and found the operation of the canal fascinating. Birding from the Chiriqui Highlands in the north to the Canal Zone, Canopy Tower; 3/2001
A summer trip to Costa Rica produced many birds and a great trip. A favorite destination for Americans, as it should be, Costa Rica has varied topography, habitats and wildlife. Several views of the extraordinary Resplendent Quetzal; 7/2001.
Many endemic birds including hummingbirds with long streaming tails. Stayed at an old sugar plantation where the owner, one of our leaders, was murdered soon after our trip. I was unable to edit this program for a long time; 4/2002
Darien is at the southern end of the Pan American Highway and borders Columbia. This trip was to a remote part of the province, an old gold and silver mining site, now a national park and sensational birding spot. The only way in or out is by plane or burro. We climb a high mountain to camp and bird in the clouds; 1/2004
This was an air trip to see most of the endemic birds in the Lesser Antilles. We were quite successful and saw much more besides in these beautiful islands. We visited 9 islands and I was most impressed at the differences between them, largely depending on who were their Colonial masters and the decisions made by the islanders when the Colonials departed; 3/2005
A video of a trip from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale through the Panama Canal with stops in Puerto Vallarta & Huatulco, MX; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Cartagena, Columbia. I had long looked forward to transiting through the Canal and watching it in operation.
