One afternoon Sally and I were with the Churchill family, who were visiting San Francisco. We decided to take the ferry to Oakland as an excursion. On the way across the Bay, I noticed a man crawl over the rail and stand on the outside, holding on, As I moved closer, I realized that he was drunk and apparently considering jumping into San Francisco Bay. I moved next to him and extended both arms under his arm pits and threw my weight back. I called nearby Ned Churchill to help me which he did. We dragged the man back across the rail and turned him over to the ferry’s crew. I never considered that he could have launched himself out from the ship and maybe taken me with him. I am sure that my interest in him would have evaporated once we hit the water…
