After three years of boarding school, I was ready to live at home and entered Georgia Tech the next fall.
I joined the Chi Phi Fraternity, following Charles along with buddies Preston Stevens, Claude McGinnis, Jim Manry and Willis Carmichael.
I well remember freshman orientation at Tech: “Gentlemen (no females then), look to your left, look to your right. One of the three of you will not be here next fall!”. That was all too true for Jim Manry.
I alternated living at the Chi Phi House and home. My grades did the same: up at home, down at “the house”. My best academic year at Tech was my senior year. I graduated with a BIE in Industrial Engineering, a member of Alpha Phi Mu, the IE honorary fraternity.
I always wanted to get involved in some activity wherever i was. At Tech, I followed Fraternity Brother, Bootie Livingston and became Freshman Basketball manager under Coach Whack Hyder.
Tech had recruited a talented group of Freshmen to its basketball program for the 1951-52 season. Included were Mickey Sermersheim, Joe Keener, Jim Fritch, Benny Register. They along with Colin Anderson and Jim Nolan (Center) made a competitive SEC basketball team.. When Bootie graduated, I became Senior Manager in 1949/50. I had a lot off in that job with great teammates. Traveling to other schools for games was a major benefit
