“Currie, the magic of the moment has passed”: 

Following my move to Palo Alto in 1969, I attended a weekend wine appreciation seminar sponsored by UC Davis in Santa Rosa. We learned to taste wine by sampling individual flavor and aroma elements in pure form. We visited several wineries to learn how grapes were turned into wine. One of the attendees was an attractive woman from Berkeley. Another was a guy from San Francisco by name of Floyd.

Following a sumptuous wine-laced dinner at the hotel, the three of us retreated to the bar and made small talk. We were feeling no pain. I was attracted to the lady. Floyd, surprisingly, was attracted to me! I thought we had shaken Floyd and went back to her room with her. Who turned up soon after: Floyd! It took us a while to convince him to leave. She looked at me and said: “Currie, the magic of the moment has passed”.

I, somewhat sheepishly, returned to my room and very soon heard a knock on the door. The magic of the moment had not passed for Floyd, and I had to threaten the police to get rid of Floyd…
