During a summer in the late 40’s, E. Rivers School, the primary school that I grew up in caught fire . After word got around, many of us gathered across Peachtree Battle Avenue from the school to watch the action. Most of us had mixed emotions. We had fond and other memories of our years there and they was all going up in smoke. Since the school had a granite veneer, we were also puzzled that it could burn so hot but burn it did, leaving a few stone walls.
Work started very soon to rebuild the school, a more moderns single story building. But certainly not the same as “our” E. Rivers….
