My mothers’ brother, Maxwell Berry, built a very successful business before and during the war called the Electric Products Company, in Cleveland, Ohio. The company built heavy duty switch gear and was ultimately bought from his children by Westinghouse.
Before the war he bought West Point Plantation on the northwestern side of Saint Simons Island. It was a gorgeous piece of undeveloped property and the location of the “Pink Chapel”, a small building constructed of coquina (rocks composed of small shells compressed by time), covered by pink lichen. Its original use, dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century is unknown, perhaps slave quarters? The building is still there.
The property’s north border is a tidal stream, beyond which are marshes which extend toward the mainland. Uncle Max and Aunt Elizabeth built a beautiful colonial mansion.
I always enjoyed visiting there. One time I was riding a horse which walked under a tree limb which swept me off in an embarrassing but not painful removal.
