n the spring of 1969 or so, Sally and I took the boys camping in Joshua Tree National Monument (now Park). On the last day the boys and I went hiking in the southern part of the park. Sally stayed in camp.
We got lost and could not refind the trail. I decided that the best strategy was to ask David to walk south toward what is now I-10 until he found a ranger or help. Steve and I would follow, but at a slower pace. We were all off-trail. What a relief when a ranger truck approached with David pointing out directions. Steve and I were picked up, given much needed water and taken back to camp to a very relieved mother.
