Manry’s yard:

rigdoncurrie

We used to be building things constantly in Jim Manry’s back yard. His yard was perfect because it was very large and essentially had no back property line, or one which we were ever aware of. We dug a large cave, which was really a large hole that we built a roof over and had a “hidden” entrance. We would create “clubs”, have camp fires, candles, etc.

We also took model trains out there to create more realistic surroundings. We were shocked…literally…when the power cable from Jim’s garage would get grounded…through us. Rain storms put an end to those capers.

We built several tree houses over the years and fortunately no one ever fell to the ground.

I recall sitting down by the creek way back of Manry’s yard after a strenuous hike. I looked down to my right and was stunned to see a coiled water moccasin just inches way. In one spontaneous move I jumped up and across the creek…out of harm’s way. We did not kill snakes since we admired and feared them. Still do.

We loved Halloween. During a few years we built life-like dummies and left them next to Habersham Road as if they were pedestrians who had been hit. We would hide nearby and watch the response. Once we left such a dummy and pulled it back into the bushes before people who stoped could get back to it. Great fun for idle minds…

We built a go-cart using a mower engine . The steering mechanism was flawed and turned over on me one day. I still carry the scar from that incident.

A name that I earned at the Manry’s house was “NP”. Mrs. Manry was a member of the “Tuesday Club” which met periodically at their house. I learned much later that the club members referred to me as “NP” for nose-picker! Yep, I was plagued with sinus trouble during much of my youth and NP was a result…
